Gala Fundraising Event: The Singing Revolution

The Englert Theatre, 2:00 pm

In 2008, the documentary film The Singing Revolution opened in theaters across the U.S. Telling the stirring story of Estonia’s quest for freedom from the Soviet Union through singing, the film met with rave reviews. New York Times critic Matt Zoller Seitz wrote:
“Imagine the scene in 'Casablanca' in which the French patrons sing 'La Marseillaise' in defiance of the Germans, then multiply its power by a factor of thousands, and you've only begun to imagine the force of 'The Singing Revolution'.”

Chamber Singers of Iowa City is honored to host the Iowa City premiere of this special film, with proceeds going toward our organization’s ongoing cultural mission. The producer and director of the film, James Tusty from New York, will open the event with a discussion of the history and making of the film.

Following the screening, Chamber Singers of Iowa City will perform selected choral works highlighted in the film, bringing the power of song depicted in the movie to vivid reality. Following the movie and performance, the event will move to the Chait Galleries across the street, where participants will get the opportunity to talk one-on-one with Mr. Tusty, music director David Puderbaugh, and members of Chamber Singers at an hors d’oeuvres reception.
