Join us at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for a program of British music.  Resident Collaborative Artist Lynda Hakken will be featured throughout the evening, connecting voice and organ in close dialogue, with playing that responds directly to the acoustics of the space.

At the center is Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs, with Iowa City baritone Nathan Brown and Hakken at the Casavant organ—a 30+ rank hybrid instrument built in Québec and installed in 2019, designed by Hakken herself. The music moves from quiet reflection to broad, open sound, filling the hall in a way only this kind of space can support. Jonathan Dove’s Missa Brevis offers a clear contrast: rhythmic, direct, and contemporary, with textures that come alive in Gloria Dei, where organ and voices often feel like one instrument.

The program also includes selections from the British part-song tradition, showing the lyricism and craft that continue to shape choral writing in the UK. Throughout the evening, singers, organ, and space work together to shape the experience, guided by Hakken’s playing.
