Chamber Singers of Iowa City Announces Dr. Alex Koppel as New Conductor

August 27, 2025 — Iowa City, IA — The Chamber Singers of Iowa City (CSIC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Alex Koppel as the ensemble’s new conductor, beginning with the 2025–2026 season. Dr. Koppel steps into the role following the distinguished 22-year tenure of Dr. David Puderbaugh, who will continue his involvement with the ensemble in the newly created role of Artistic Director.

Dr. Koppel brings to CSIC a deep commitment to the ensemble’s mission of presenting high-quality choral music that inspires and educates audiences. With an academic and artistic background steeped in both performance and pedagogy, he shares the ensemble’s belief in the transformative power of choral singing and the importance of building musical excellence through community.

Dr. David Puderbaugh, who has shaped CSIC's sound and spirit over more than two decades, expressed his enthusiasm for the leadership transition:
“Passing the baton to Dr. Koppel is an exciting and natural next step for this ensemble. He brings both tremendous musical ability and a sense of curiosity and care that aligns beautifully with CSIC’s values. It’s a pleasure to welcome someone with such promise and potential.”

In his new role as Artistic Director, Dr. Puderbaugh will remain closely connected to CSIC’s artistic vision, mentoring and supporting the ensemble’s continued artistic growth.

Dr. Koppel shared his excitement about joining the CSIC community:
"I am thrilled to be joining the Chamber Singers of Iowa City. Even before stepping onto the podium, I’ve been struck by the warmth, dedication, and musical spirit of this community. It’s clear that this is a group that values connection and excellence in equal measure, and I’m honored to be part of its next chapter.”

CSIC looks forward to a vibrant new chapter under Dr. Koppel’s direction, with continued creative vision from Dr. Puderbaugh. Together, they will steward the ensemble’s aim to create enriching musical experiences for singers and audiences alike.
